The Meanest Medium in the World Interview with Ulay
  • Babnik, Jan
»Performance is ephemeral – you do it now and it is gone.«

Probably there is no person more appropriate to answer the questions about the relation between performance and photography than Ulay. His artistic path would be aptly termed performance - photographic, such playfulness with photography, and thorough   questioning of the medium itself, its ontology, its social meaning and even intimacy, is  hard to find in works of the others. Performances conducted in front the camera for the  camera (series Soliloquy), photogramic copying of the self (Polagram, 1992 or  Photogram, 2000), photographing of life sized polaroids with the biggest Polaroid camera  available, and we have only started to count. Ulay says that photography is the meanest  medium in the world.
