Bazin, André

Born in 1918 in Angers, France, died in 1958. André Bazin is one of the cofounders of French magazine Cahiers du cinéma, the main drive of French critical thought and theory of film. He edited the magazine until his death. In his critical opus of more than thousand essays he tackled the ontology of film and the relation of film to other artistic media; he is most known though as a founder of the theory of film realism. He is the main inventor of the film criticism and film studies in general. He was influenced by and was also himself an influential member of the intellectual milieu of mid and postwar Paris, with representatives such as Sartre and Marlaux.
